With increasing internet penetration, Indian online gaming market is seen as an opportunity with a large potential today. Developers across the world are expected to enter the booming Indian online gaming market. Monetization in the past has been a big challenge for developers. Currently, revenue models in the industry include:

In-App advertising : Banner advertisements is based on revenue earned from the ad network depending on Cost per Click(CPC) or Cost per Mille (CPM)

In-Game product or brand placement : Revenue can be earned directly by promoting brands by placing their advertisements / branding directly in the UI / game play environment.

Incentive based advertisement : Allow the player to earn virtual currency, game play requisites or access to the game by watching advertisements.

Purchase / pay per download : Upfront charge for download and access to the game. This is the most straightforward system and works well for niche, in demand games and apps.

Freemium / upgrade model : Free to download and use a limited part /tries of the game. Player is charged for full access and unlocks all features, characters, levels etc. This is probably the most sensible model for new games or get traction with new users.

In-app purchase : Gamers pay to unlock virtual objects or virtual currency. This model works for complex / popular games in which the gamer would need to purchase some virtual objects to progress (faster) in the game.

Subscription model :  This could be an monthly or annual subscription for access to a package that could be virtual objects, extended access to the game or a combination of these. This generally works well for device/ platform based access.

Online gaming industry has started to increasingly deriving revenues through ‘Paid by Ecosystem’ and ‘Paid by Online Gamers’.

Most developers are still dependent on the advertisers and publishers for monetization. Today, online gaming industry has started to adapt to the market and is increasingly deriving revenues through ‘In-app advertisement’ and ‘Incentive based advertisement

As the market grows in terms of volume and usage over the next five years, it is expected to move to a ‘Freemium’ model to recognize a better balance of revenue realization from the ‘Ecosystem’ and ‘Online gamer(s)’. ‘Freemium upgrades’ and ‘In-app purchases’ are expected to see an improved growth in future.

The advent of India’s online gaming industry dates back to the early 2000 s, when console and PC gaming brought several middle-income Indians onto the digital gaming platforms. India has now become a blockbuster story enabled by the rise in Internet penetration and the increase in the smartphone user base. The online gaming market realized impressive volumes with 120 million online gamer(s) and a market value estimated at 44.2 billion Indian rupees in 2018. The key driver of market volume was proliferation of low cost smartphones amongst urban and rural population. The monetization is realized through revenue streams like in-app purchase, pay per download, subscription service etc. by gamer(s) and in-app advertisement, incentive based advertisement etc.

In the future, India is expected to move towards value driven consumption and comprehensive local content development. The industry is expected to gain momentum and reach a market value of 1 billion USD with 310 million online gamer(s) by 2021. This 28% CAGR growth will be driven by

  • Rising Disposable Income
  • Youthful demographics
  • Affordable new Technologies
  • Localized content
  • Internet Penetration
  • Smartphone Penetration
  • Ability for masses to make Digital Payment
  • Growing local Developer ecosystem

The key driver of market volume was proliferation of low cost smartphones amongst urban and rural population. 75 percent of the market is dominated by entry-level or sub-INR 10,000 smartphones.

As compared to 31 per cent today, the internet penetration is expected to reach 53 per cent of population by 2021. The smartphone users, projected to be 470 million by 2021, are expected to enable this rise in internet penetration. The availability of affordable smartphones is expected to prompt a shift from the current feature phone users to smartphones.

The surge in volumes of mobile internet users is likely to be complemented by a five times rise in data consumption and 1.6 times increase in disposable income of our country. Hence, the market is expected to be enhanced with young population, high internet volumes, engaged online users and improved paying propensity by 2021.

With background of such developments, the industry is expected to gain momentum and reach a market value of USD one billion and 310 million online gamer(s) by 2021. This growth is expected to be further supported by the comprehensive rise in digital payment user base, launch of new technologies at affordable rates, increase in local developer base and focus on development of content with local themes, Indian languages and global standards.

If the game bug has bitten you and you are wondering whether it is the right time to start your first game, we feel this is as good as it gets. While there will be many opportunities opening up in the future, the proverbial saying that the early bird catches the worm always holds true.

There are numerous reasons that create cross-platform app development seem attractive to some companies. Because this process is less labor-intensive and helps in decreases development cost and the effort that is essential to build and launch multiple mobile applications across several platforms.

There are lots of cross-platform tools existing in the market. The popular preferences include Appcelerator Titanium, Sencha, Xamarin, PhoneGap, Unity, Cocos 2D and Adobe AIR.

cross platform tools for mobile apps and game development

The mobile game market is ever evolving and inviting. With over 2 billion smartphones in the market and over 1.3 billion active users means an exploding smartphone user base, which directly translates to huge demand in the game market. Developers are likely to rake in the bucks but the scenario also warrants strategies that can assuredly bring profit to the table.

What Could Be These Strategies? Let’s Discuss.

  1. Genre-Based Development

Genre decides the addressable market size of players. Are you creating a strategy-game or RPG, a sports or action-adventure game? Below are some of the most popular genres:

bfg-most-popular-mobile-game-genres

You must also realise your target audience – whether male or female, teens or elderly, seasoned gamers or intellectuals. Remember Super Mario? It’s been a success for obvious reasons – everyone could relate to it.And how do you think Angry Birds became a multi-billion brand and a full-length feature film? It had a comic game play that could entice anyone. No wonder it still picks up steam.

appfigures-angry-birds

However, sci-fi themed game books like Hyper Rift, the Android-adapted GTA, tabletop gaming concepts like Knights of Pen and Paper, simpler games like Subway Surfers, My Talking Angela, Where’s My Water, and even other old-school games like Mahjong, Solitaire, and Puzzle are equally popular.

       2. Compelling Story Line

Story line largely determines the engagement, stickiness, and retention rate of games. If it’s interesting, it’ll urge players to introduce the game to fellow players, thus growing the infection rate and virality.

Although in the world of mobile gaming, the story line isn’t much a conversation piece, the tides have been turning of late. There are so many games out there with game plots that keep players glued to the screen.

Think of The Walking Dead, Hero of Many, Final Fantasy VI, Chaos Rings, Broken Age, This War of Mine, Super borthers: Sword and Sorcery, Lone Wolf, The Bard’s Tale, and the classic, Bladur’s Gate. With such fantastic graphics, well-written dialogues, and impactful story campaigns, decision-making within the game is tough, but fun.

        3. Simple Entry And Exit Events

A game must deliver player satisfaction. The simpler, the better. Complexities only increase the churn. A fantastic example is Plant vs. Zombies, which begins with a basic front yard, progressing towards levels where the game play turns challenging.

Plant vs. Zombies

Its gamification includes zombie-scribbled letters notifying players about the progress. The musical score is quirky (another strategy for games that engage). Finally, it’s either the player wiping out zombies or them eating brains. That’s it. No twists. The game ends there.

Similar games include the Temple Run series, Field runners, CSR Racing, and the recently popular Clash of Clans, which have their complexities, but never confuse the players. Whenever played, these games are sure to give you the adrenaline rush you desire.

Of course, as screen sizes continue to grow mobile devices would turn more powerful. In the near future, we could witness a large number of games in the mobile space with complicated entry and exit event, and even more complicated game play.

       4. Cross-Platform Compatibility

The very purpose of a cross-platform compatible game is to have an extensive player reach and maximise its audience. Now, Android and iOS cover a whopping 95% of the smartphone market in fairly equal halves. Games that are Android-only or iOS-only are likely to miss out on almost half of their target audience.

Also, let’s remind ourselves that any futuristic device will surely have access to the web. Games that are not created with a view to functioning on such devices will lose to the competition eventually.

A suitable example is PokémonGO, which was an overnight craze. With a unique approach to tracking cohorts and funnels via location-based augmented reality, this game has redefined app monetisation. It has won over 10 million users since inception seeping into Android and iOS devices. What do you think could have been its fate had it not been cross-platform compatible?

         5. Celebrity Branding

As a space-age Game Master, you wouldn’t skip this. This is a built-in marketing tool facilitating user-acquisition. Earlier it was limited to film franchises (think Prince of Persia).

Today, celebrity-endorsed games are creating ripples. Isn’t Kim Kardashian: Hollywood a perfect example of leveraging star power? This trend is here to stay.

Follow the best practices of Game Development.

  • Discuss and research your idea before investing any money. Creating another Clash of Clans will not make you money easily. You need to make it different even if it is in the same mould.
  • Start your project with clearly defined objectives. This might change over the development, but at least you have a clear direction and an idea of the time and cost.
  • Create a Game Design Document to clarify all aspects of the game.
  • Choose a development tool that works for your game. Unity, Unreal and Havok work well for 3D games. While Unity is also used ideal for 2D games, there are other options as well, including Corona, Marmalade, Phaser and the like.
  • Choose an experienced and enthusiastic team that can devote time to your game.
  • There is nothing called “too much testing” when it comes to games.

Game content creation should centre on player behaviour and gamer loyalty via reciprocity, authority, and social engagement. Discover the scope and then create a game. Don’t create a game and then hunt for its scope.

The creators of Pokemon Go are reportedly exploring sponsorship opportunities with business houses across Japan. Niantic Labs, the game’s developer has opened up conversations with several companies to build numerous PokeStops. The game being broadcasted around the globe, the game’s creators Niantic (California) and Game Freak (Japan) have introduced a new video announcing the game’s arrival in Japan.

John Hanke, CEO Niantic, has said Pokemon “is a beautiful franchise that originated in Japan”. He has also maintained “Keep your head up, look at the world around you, and be safe.” This video is being considered a potential partnership attempt with Japanese McDonald’s outlets. Presently there would be McDonald’s 400 restaurants which will be working as gyms in the game. Remaining 2,500 outlets of McDonald’s will act as PokéStops.

The creators of the game have been successful in making the game a smash hit. News of the partnership was first reported by Wall Street Journal on Tuesday. Soon after its launch in United States Pokemon Go saw frenzy in numerous public places like restaurants, streets, parks and office premises. Nintendo is all set to bring out a wearable device for wrists that will provide alerts to its players. With the present circumstances McDonald’s restaurants in Japan will act like collection centres for collecting virtual supplies needed for the game’s on-screen battles. Hanke sounded excited about the future of the game and added, “I’m very excited about investing in that area, about building prototypes and bringing our gaming products to that hardware as it comes to market…”

Pokemon Go has remained in the top headlines for being one of the most popular augmented reality games in the gaming history. Apple has not revealed the exact download figures for Pokemon Go but the app has reportedly churned massive revenues by 11th July, 2016 itself. It comes as no surprise that all adults and kids have remained hooked to the game. Amidst some bad news of accidents the hysteria surrounding the game has been maintained so far.

According to SuperData Research firm the game has already made a whopping $14 million and its daily revenue earning has been estimated as $2 million in the first week (of its launch) itself. App Store has confirmed the fact that Pokemon Go has been the most downloaded mobile app since its release. In spite of the true numbers not being revealed it is being considered by industry experts that the game has redefined frenzy and hysterics. The app developer, Niantic had collaborated with The Pokémon Company to publish this free-to-play mobile app on 5th of July, 2016 without knowing the possible battle that would set in soon after the launch.

Niantic has reportedly shown its interest in bringing out trading options and Pokecenters. Pokemon Go being officially launched in Japan and 30 other nations in the world is being slated to have few more outstanding goals in the coming future.

Few interesting turn of events have taken place since the game has been launched.

  • Individuals are known to buy and sell high authority accounts for hundreds of pounds. This has resulted due to the high popularity of Pokémon Go.
  • Sand Diego Comic Con’s Pokemon Panel has been updated and made available to a larger audience with a large sized venue being introduced. New features like trading Pokemon with other users have been introduced. Added features are being introduced with hopes of setting new standards to high level gaming.
  • Nintendo has reached a valuation of more than $42 billion which makes it stand above Sony.
  • Crowdsourced Pokémon Go maps are made available for users to search and catch their desired Pokemon wherever they go.
  • OurMine the popular hacking group has allegedly been responsible for bringing the servers down. However they remained tight lipped on the fact that neither they nor Niantic were sure whether the heavy demand set by millions of users was behind the occurrence.
  • PoodleCorp which is also known for being a well-known hacking group has announced to bring down Pokémon Go on 1 August.
